How to keep food from freezing while camping in the winter

One of the most difficult aspects of winter camping is keeping your food from freezing. This can be difficult, but it is not impossible; here are some pointers to get you started.

Insulate your food to keep it from freezing during the winter camping season.

While a cooler may seem counterintuitive in this situation, it is, at its core, an insulator.

We wholeheartedly recommend the Yeti Hopper Cooler. It is a soft case cooler that can be flattened when not in use but provides significantly more insulation than a bag or nothing at all.

If you want to take it a step further, warm some water in a bottle and place it inside your cooler to keep everything from freezing. You can repeat this step as needed to keep your food from freezing.

The Yeti Rambler 36oz bottle with chug cap comes highly recommended.

You should also properly pack your food. Keep everything together in a single container, and try to pack items that are likely to freeze together. This will assist in keeping everything insulated.

Portable stove

If you’re concerned about your food freezing, consider bringing a portable stove.

You can heat up your food and keep it at the proper temperature, avoiding any problems.

If you want to lose weight, we recommend the Biolite Camp Stove 2. You can fuel it with sticks and debris found in your camp, eliminating the need to transport fuel canisters.

Freeze-dried food

If you want to be absolutely certain that your food will not freeze, buy freeze-dried food. These meals will not freeze and will only require hot water to prepare.

If you’re unsure about which meals to purchase, we recommend Mountain House Adventure Meals. They have meals for all occasions, such as the Beef Stroganoff with Noodles and the Breakfast Skillet.

In the winter, will a cooler keep food from freezing?

A cooler is unquestionably the best option for winter camping because it keeps your food warm.

While it will freeze less than if you had stored your food in nothing at all, anything stored in a cooler bag or cooler will not be completely frozen in extremely low temperatures.

In this case, additional insulation, such as blankets or towels, or a bottle of warmed-up water, will be required.

Can a Yeti prevent food from freezing?

A Yeti is an excellent investment for those who intend to camp in cold weather because it keeps food and drinks from freezing for an extended period of time.

A Yeti cooler is of high quality and provides better insulation than a cheaper cooler.

However, as previously stated, if the temperatures are too low, even a Yeti won’t be able to keep everything from freezing.
